Yangtze - Year Two
In Year 2, we ensure a smooth transition from Year 1 by working closely with Year 1 teachers to understand the learning, behaviour and emotional needs of every child. Children also have the opportunity to visit their new classroom and spend time with their new teacher, helping them feel confident and settled as they begin the year.
Reading, writing and maths are a high priority in Year 2, ensuring that children develop into confident Key Stage 1 readers, writers and mathematicians. Through engaging lessons and supportive teaching, pupils continue to strengthen their key skills and grow in independence.
In English, children are introduced to a range of high-quality texts that help to broaden their vocabulary, develop their understanding of language and deepen their love of reading. As their skills progress, many children move on from phonics practice to learning and applying spelling rules to support their writing.
History, Geography and Science are taught through engaging topic-based learning. These topics are carefully chosen to reflect the needs and interests of our children, helping to make learning meaningful and exciting. Our topics include Engineers and Inventors, Leeds, China, Kings and Queens, and Knights and Castles.
We believe that teaching Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is essential in helping children grow into happy, confident and resilient individuals. Through PSHE, pupils develop important life skills and gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Our lessons explore key themes such as friendship, what makes us healthy, keeping safe indoors and outdoors, medicines and me, and boys, girls and families. These topics help children build awareness, responsibility and confidence in everyday situations.
